Megan Lofting is a documentary photographer who was born and raised in North Vancouver, Canada. Her work is deeply rooted in community and collaboration. She prioritizes spending quality time with the individuals and communities she engages with to gain a deeper understanding of their identities, experiences, and desired narratives. Central to her approach is ensuring that these individuals feel their stories are authentically and compassionately portrayed.

Megan draws inspiration from the life experiences of those closest to her. To My Unborn Child, a project initiated during her enrollment in the Documentary Practice and Visual Storytelling Online program at the International Center of Photography in 2023, was sparked by the shared journey she and her partner were navigating. While the initial plan did not involve incorporating their personal narrative into the project, it was their intimate experience that motivated Megan to explore the issues surrounding perinatal loss in a deeper and more visual way.

Megan is passionate about documenting stories that are primarily invisible and often go unnoticed, making them challenging for those outside of the experience to comprehend. She thrives on blending various forms of photography and text to vividly convey the emotions associated with such experiences.

Megan is interested in exploring and documenting gender, social, and environmental issues. She is committed to helping those who have experienced discrimination, indifference, and inequity tell their stories. Collaborating with individuals who feel as though they are underrepresented and supporting them in changing that, is a primary goal for her.

Megan is continuing to work on the project To My Unborn Child with support from the Rita K. Hillman Foundation Fellowship. She is currently living in Edmonton, Canada.
